Chena Fry

Favourite fried chena side dish among Keralites


  • Chena or elephant yam - 250 gm or 2 cups
  • Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
  • Chilli powder - 2 tsp
  • Salt to taste or 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves - few or 1 tbsp
  • Garam masala powder - 1/2 tsp ( optional )
  • Oil - 1/2 cup for deep fry


  1. Remove the skin of chena ( yam ) and cut into very thin pieces
  2. Wash it well and drain it
  3. In a bowl combine chena with chilli powder , turmeric powder , salt, garam masala powder & curry leaves
  4. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat and fry the chena about five minutes
  5. Then bring the heat to medium - low and fry it another 5 minutes
  6. Flip it half way through and fry until golden brown
  7. Transfer it into a plate with paper towel
  8. Enjoy this as a side dish along with rice
