Cheru Payar (Split green gram) Curry

Split green gram curry

Ingredients

  • Moong dal - 1 cup
  • Shallot - 5 nos sliced
  • Green chilli - 3 nos slit lengthwise
  • Garlic - 2 nos
  • Tomato - 1 small
  • Turmeric - 1/2 tsp
  • Chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • Salt - to taste or 1 tsp
  • Water - 1/2 cup
    For temper:
  • Coconut oil - 2 tbsp
  • Mustard - 1 tbsp
  • Curry leaves - few or 1 stem
  • Whole red chilli - 2

Instructions

  1. In a pressure cooker combine moong dal, shallot, green chilli, tomato and garlic.
  2. Add turmeric, chilli powder ,salt and water.
  3. Cover and turn on the stove to medium heat, wait for the first whistle then remove from heat
  4. Heat oil in a sauce pan and splutter mustard then add whole red chilli and curry leaves.
  5. Add cooked moong dal from the cooker and add more water if needed
  6. Boil for 2 minutes and remove from heat.
  7. Serve with hot rice or chapathi. Enjoy.
