Banana Flower Thoran

Tasty banana flower thoran to go with hot rice


  • Banana Flower - 1 nos
  • Onion (chopped) - 1/2 nos
  • Green Chilli (split lengthwise) - 3 nos
  • Coconut(shredded) - 1/2 cup
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 Tsp
  • Water - 3 Tbs
  • Salt - to taste
    To Temper
  • Coconut Oil - 1 Tbs
  • Mustard Seeds - 1/2 Tsp
  • Red Dried Chilli - 2 nos
  • Cumin Seeds - 1/4 Tsp
  • Curry Leaves - 1 stalk ~ 8 leaves


  1. Heat a pan or kadai over medium temperature
  2. Pour coconut oil, wait until you get a nice aroma then splutter mustard seeds
  3. Add in dried chilli , cumin seeds and curry leaves saute well to mix
  4. Add chopped onion, green chilli, saute to mix all ingredients
  5. Add chopped banana flower, turmeric powder, salt and water. Mix it all up in the pan
  6. Saute well in between cook time to prevent scorching
  7. After 10 min or so add in the shredded coconut mix well
  8. In about 2 - 3 min your banana flower thoran will be ready
    How to chop the banana flower ?
  1. Remove about 4 to 5 layers of leaves until you see young and fresh leaves
  2. You can either remove the bunch of pistils in between layers or use it in your thoran
  3. Cut out the bottom (handle) of the flower
  4. Start chopping from one end or similar to how you chop an onion
  5. Wash well
  6. Banana flower may vary in sizes, feel free to adjust the ingredients as per your taste
