A tasty snack to go with your evening tea


  • Potato - 4 nos boiled ,peeled and slightly mashed
  • Onion - 2 nos chopped
  • Green chilli - 5 nos chopped
  • Ginger - 1 " piece crushed
  • Curry leaves - 2 stems chopped
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Red Chilli flakes - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt to taste or 1 1/2 tsp
  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Mustard - 1 tsp
  • Urad dal - 1 tsp (Uzhunnu parippu)
    For batter :
  • Gram flour - 1/2 cup
  • All - purpose flour - 1/2 cup
  • Rice flour - 1/4 cup
  • Salt - 1/2 tsp
  • Water - 1/2 cup or enough for make medium thick consistency batter
    For fry:
  • Oil - 1 cup


  1. Heat oil in a pan, splutter mustard and urad dal
  2. Add chopped onion and saute till its transparent
  3. Add ginger,green chilli and curry leaves, saute for about 1 minute
  4. Add turmeric powder , chilli flakes, salt and saute
  5. Now add in the mashed potatoes and fold in all ingredients well. Switch off the stove
  6. Let it cool to touch. Now, make lime sized balls with the potato masala mixture and set aside
  7. Meanwhile make a batter with gram flour, all - purpose flour, rice flour & salt
  8. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat until its hot
  9. Dip potato balls into the batter & deep fry till it golden brown, flip in between
  10. Enjoy hot with tomato ketchup and tea
  1. For boiling potatoes its easier to use pressure cooker. Place whole unpeeled washed potatoes along with 1 cup of water and 1 tsp of salt. Heat the cooker over medium heat. Then after the first whistle, bring the flame to low-medium and wait for the second whistle before switching off the stove. When its cool take out the potatoes, peel and mash.
